SY3 Datacenter Core Switch Replacement

Upgrading Datacenter Backbone for Future Readiness

To address end-of-life issues and prepare for future needs, Veolia replaced its SY3 datacenter’s core Nexus switches with the advanced Nexus 9K series. These switches form the backbone of the datacenter, supporting critical services such as VMware, Nutanix, AWS Direct Connect, and MPLS links.

What we did?

  • Replaced aging Nexus core switches with new Nexus 9K series switches to ensure high availability and performance.
  • Updated configurations for compatibility with new hardware, ensuring continuity of services.

How we did it?

  • Preparation and Planning
  • Verified physical ports, interface configurations, and compatibility of SFP modules with new hardware.
  • Documented current configurations for all Layer 1 and Layer 2 network components.
  • Configuration and Implementation
  • Replicated VLAN, STP, and VPC configurations on the new switches.
  • Updated Layer 3 protocols, including OSPF, EIGRP, and BGP, with proper route verification.
  • Testing and Coordination
  • Engaged application and service owners to test dependencies before the switch replacement.
  • Conducted pre- and post-replacement tests to ensure all services, such as AWS Direct Connect and Cisco VOIP, functioned as expected.
  • Documentation and Change Management
  • Created a detailed scope of work for the replacement team.
  • Submitted and obtained approval for planned changes through Veolia’s change management process.

The Outcome

The switch replacement was executed seamlessly, with no significant disruptions. All applications and services continued functioning as expected, and the datacenter’s backbone was modernized for future scalability.
